Berkeley BESO - Home Energy Score (HES) Assessments

The U.S. Department of Energy created a program to provide homeowners with a home energy report. The Home Energy Score Report estimates home energy use, associated costs, and provides energy solutions to cost-effectively improve the home’s efficiency. Each Home Energy Score is shown on a simple one-to-ten scale, where a ten represents the most efficient homes. Energy efficiency improvements and electrification (conversion to electric appliances) recommendations in the assessment report are encouraged, but not required.

Berkeley’s BESO (Building Emissions Saving Ordinance) requires property owners to complete assessments of their building’s current energy performance and opportunities for improvement.

Property owners are required to comply with the Berkeley BESO (Building Emissions Saving Ordinance) requirements before listing their building for sale or apply for a deferral. If the seller has deferred the Berkeley BESO, the buyer will need to complete an assessment within 6 months.

What takes place at the Berkeley BESO Assessment?

We are at the property for about an hour or so, measuring the house footprint and sketching up a rough floor plan. We also measure all the windows. We will need access to electrical panels, as well as the attic and crawlspace (if present) to view the insulation present. We record the age and energy source for the appliances such as furnace, water heater, kitchen stove and laundry dryer.

When do I get the report?
We input the info into the U.S. Department of Energy computer program the same day. When the approved report is returned, we copy you and Berkeley so that the results are on file. It typically takes 2-5 days for them to return the approved report to us.
How much does it cost?

The cost is based on the square footage of the house.

What type of Multi-family units can be assessed?

DMP Inspections is certified to conduct home energy assessments on residential properties with 1-4 units where the units are side-by-side. Multi-family units that are stacked on top of each other, require assessors with mixed-use and commercial building certification. DMP Inspections can not provide the energy assessments for these types of multi-family homes.
